Major Australian Airport Group CO2 Audit & Optimisation Feasibility Study

Actionable Opportunities for Digital Decarbonisation
As part of the Major Australian Airport Group’s overarching commitment to environmental sustainability and carbon management, Virtual Abode conducted a comprehensive Website CO2 & Performance Audit.
To demonstrate the actionable opportunity for digital decarbonisation, Virtual Abode created a dev-environment proof-of-concept (PoC). By benchmarking digital asset compression, server efficiency, and code streamlining, we modelled how targeted optimisations could achieve up to a 75% potential reduction in carbon emissions per web page view without compromising brand aesthetic or user experience.

The Challenge
Digital infrastructure contributes noticeably to global carbon emissions. Modern enterprise websites – rich with high-resolution media, video assets, and heavy script libraries – require significant energy to process, transfer, and render across client devices
The Major Australian Airport Group sought to:
- Quantify the environmental impact and energy transfer of their main corporate website.
- Identify core drivers of page weight and digital carbon load across top-visited pages.
- Evaluate whether sustainable web optimisation could drastically lower emissions without sacrificing brand aesthetics or user experience.

Our Approach: Audit & Feasibility Proof-of-Concept
1. Comprehensive Digital CO2 Audit
We analysed the Major Australian Airport Group’s main website architecture, measuring data transfer, server response times, asset delivery, and DOM complexity to establish a clear baseline carbon footprint per visit.
2. Development Server Optimisation (The Proof-of-Concept)
To illustrate potential savings, we re-engineered a replica of their homepage within our controlled development environment to demonstrate the impact of digital sustainability best practices:
- Next-Gen Asset Compression: Evaluated converting heavy imagery into lightweight WebP formats and stripped hidden metadata.
- Script & DOM Streamlining: Identified render-blocking code and opportunities to reduce unnecessary network calls.
- Efficient Asset Delivery: Optimised asset loading so browser rendering required minimal client-side processing energy.
“Virtual Abode proved that sustainable web design delivers immediate impact. Seeing a 75% drop in carbon emissions on a dev server homepage was incredible. They delivered clear, data-backed insights that made building our business case seamless.”
